[2012-03-06] PICTURE THIS: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL

BLASt’s inauguration took place on March 6, 2012. The meeting was devoted to two acclaimed graphic novels: Art Spiegelman's Pulitzer-winning Maus: A survivor's tale and Alison Bechdel's Fun Home: A family tragicomic

Taking the unique status of the graphic novel, a genre of literature that combines narrative and illustration, as our starting point, we discussed the graphic novel’s phenomenon as an art form with its own history and tradition, as a literary genre and an effective conveyor of story. Although different in storyline and artwork, both Maus and Funhome touch upon such complex issues as personal history, memories and the father-child relationship.
