[2013-11-28] THANKSGIVING

To give thanks in solitude is enough. Thanksgiving has wings and goes where it must go. Your prayer knows much more about it than you do.- Victor Hugo
Notwithstanding the ring of righteous truth to this statement, it is imperfect in a way. Book Lovers Among Students did not agree with “the solitude part” and decided to take matters into their own hands. And, thus, on Thursday, November 28th, BLASt celebrated this year’s Thanksgiving Day.

What an unforgettable evening it was! First of all, we had a chance to attend an interesting lecture held by Michał Kasprowicz on Thanksgiving and its role in popular culture. Then, the poetry reading contest took place: the participants presented various poems that changed their lives. During this “fierce competition” :) we admired the literary artistry of many American poems, for example, that of Elinor Wylie, T.S. Elliot, Tracey K. Smith, Charles Bukowski, Edna St. Vincent Millay, William Carlos Williams, and Wallace Stevens. After a heated debate (which was no mean feat!), the jury singled out four most original declamations. Congratulations! And finally, after the serious stuff, we moved on to a game of literary charades during which the participants were supposed to act out (either by drawing or showing) a title, a protagonist or an author. In such “nerve-wracking” games no holds barred! However, there were no losers or winners this time :)
Thank you once more for your presence and participation: had it not been for you this meeting would have not been such a success!
We also warmly invite all students to join the ranks of BLASt! It is worth it!
And see you in December! We will discuss a graphic novel by Chris Ware Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth.
