2nd REAL Student Symposium 2015

The 2^nd Re-Examining American Literature Student Symposium devoted to “Narration and Storytelling: the Death of the Narrative” took place on the 21^st of March. The event was organized by The American Studies Scholarly Circle Book Lovers Among Students (BLASt) at the Faculty of English. There were five thematically-oriented sessions: Voices and Visions, Storytelling and Identity, Narration and Postcolonial Condition, Narratives and Representation as well as Storytelling and Mythology. Our key speaker was dr hab. Paweł Stachura from Adam Mickiewicz University who gave a magnificent lecture entitled: Screenwriting Gurus and Precession of Simulacra. Our delegates came from Adam Mickiewicz University, University of Silesia, Szczecin University, University of Gdańsk, Zielona Góra University, Nicolaus Copernicus University as well as University of Warsaw.

Book Lovers Among Students prepared two hour-long lectures for the 17th Festival of Art and Science. Here are the abstracts of the talks:

REAL Symposium 2014

On the 29th of March, the 1st REAL (Re-Examining American Literature) Student Symposium devoted to “Historicity and Memory: Postmodern struggles with the past” took place. This event was organized by The American Studies Scholarly Circle Book Lovers Among Students (BLASt) and the Faculty of English at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. There were five thematically-oriented sessions: Historicity and the Visual Arts, Postmodern Visions of History, The Classics and History, Personal Histories/Family Dramas as well as the Afro-American History. Our key speaker was dr Jacek Partyka from the University of Białystok who gave a magnificent lecture entitled: “Toward ‘Archival’ Poetics: Records of Extreme Experience in Charles Reznikoff’s Testimony. The United States 1885-1890. Recitative (1965) and Holocaust (1975).” Our delegates from Toruń, Gdańsk, Katowice, Warsaw, Wrocław and Poznań set a very high standard and we sincerely hope that this symposium will give rise to an annual conference dedicated to American literature.

A/R/T Journal Issue #1

This month, one of our BLASt colleagues had a paper published in the first issue of Analyses/Rereadings/Theories journal, an electronic publication created by Maciej Wieczorek and Joanna Matyjaszczyk at Łódź University. This edition is devoted to the subject of body, form and surface, and provides different views on corporeality with relation to various art forms. 

Małgorzata Olsza's article is titled Between the Subject and the Object: Chris Burden's Body Art and deals specifically with the examination of Chris Burden's most prominent and interpretatively complex pieces – Shoot (1971), Through the Night Softly (1973) and Doomed (1975). In her paper, Małgorzata argues that "the body for the artist is a space of transgression between the subject and the object, where the boundaries between the two spheres become fluid, if not questionable" (Olsza 2013).

3rd USS Conference, 11.05.2013, Łódź

Last Saturday, two of our club members participated in a student conference hosted by The United Students Society, a fellow student organization at the Department of American Literature, University of Łódź.

The topic of the conference was Transformations / Metamorphoses: The Notion of Change in Contemporary North American Literature and Culture.

XVI Festiwal Nauki i Sztuki w Poznaniu [2013-04-10]

Today, our BLASt team actively participated in Science and Art Festival in Poznań. Members of our club gave an hour long lecture on the American superheroes and their relationship with the American culture, society and politics. Here's an abstract of the talk:

6th GCSS Student Conference, 16-17.03.2013, Łódź

This weekend members of our club participated in an international student conference hosted 

by The Geoffrey Chaucer Student Society in Łódź.

The 6^th GCSS Student Conference on the topic of intertextuality took place at the University of Łódź on March 16-17, 2013. The phenomenon of intertextuality was discussed in various contexts and in reference to diverse literary and non-literary texts.  The conference sessions were devoted to musical and visual intertexts; intertextuality in drama; mythical and chivalric intertexts; independent life of literary characters; intertextuality in relation to religion and ideology; intertextuality and the problem of textual functions and myths, legends and pop-cultural recycling.
